Starting an eBay Business

From LoveToKnow Online

Many people have turned their casual online auction selling into a profitable eBay business.

Tips For Building An eBay Business

Some people even make their living selling items on eBay from their homes. You, too, can build an eBay business in your spare time. The key is to find an item you can easily acquire for little money and can sell on eBay for a solid profit. There are literally thousands of different items you can focus on. People sell jewelry, china, books, sports memorabilia, clothing and pretty much everything else. The key is to find something you are interested in and you can easily handle in the space you have available. If you live in a small apartment, for example, you don’t want to try selling pianos.

Whatever you decide to sell, the basic business will look the same. As an example, let’s look at someone who is selling records on eBay. LPs haven’t been popular for many years and most people don’t have a record player anymore. Despite that, more than 200,000 records are on sale on eBay at any time. Collectors want them for nostalgia, for DJing or because of a preference. The things you need to do to build a record business are the same that you would follow to build other businesses on eBay.

Understand The eBay Market For Your Item

Search eBay to find listings of your item. Study the prices people pay for different types of the item. Note what prices you will have to buy items for in order to sell them for an acceptable profit. For records, the majority sell for about $3, with more desirable ones selling for much more.

Study Shipping

You need to find out how collectors expect their purchases to be packaged and shipped and how much you should charge for shipping. You can do this by looking for information in the listings, or you can even e-mail a seller and ask them for the information.

Secure A Large Supply At A Low Price

You need to be creative in order to find as many items as you can at the best price. You can find records for sale at flea markets and garage sales, often for less than a dollar each. The price could even be lower if you buy the whole stack. Many people have dozens of records sitting around collecting dust. You could knock on the doors of people who have lived in your neighborhood for a long time to see if they have records they want to get rid of. They might even give them to you if you offer to move them. You could place a classified ad in the newspaper or on a site like Craigslist offering to buy collections of records. By buying whole collections you can get a better price, and you stand a good chance of finding a few real gems that will sell for high prices. As you are buying you must remember that the lower your average price per item, the lower your risk and the higher your likelihood of success with your eBay business.

Make Your Listings Look Great

Take a look at the listings of items similar to yours on eBay. You want yours to look better. Use a good digital camera to take pictures of the items. Make the listing information accurate, concise and easy to read. Provide clear information about shipping taxes and any other information buyers might need. Make the listing look professional and easy to use. Since you will be listing many items, you will want to use a listing tool that can make it easier. eBay offers some tools that are a good place to start.

Always Be Professional

The most important thing to you as you build your eBay business is the feedback customers leave for you. Good feedback will build buyer confidence and more people will bid on your items. To get good feedback, you need to ship items quickly, deliver what the listing has led the buyer to expect and respond quickly to any questions or problems that come up.
