Online maps, printable from various sources, are a great way to have a copy of a country or section of the world at your fingertips anytime you want. Global maps, hemisphere maps, city maps: they are all available within a moment's notice. Check out some of the following websites for online maps, printable right from your computer.
Global Maps
If you are looking for basic maps that include just outlines, then go to Eduplace. The website is educational, but you can print maps for personal or classroom use. All maps are in PDF format.
Eduplace offers global maps of all the continents and even splits up the larger ones like Asia, divided into Southeast Asia and the Pacific. Under each continent there are additional maps you can view and print. Choose from physical or topographical maps and political maps that reference capitals and major cities. For the history buff, you can pull up historic maps of the United States, like Lewis and Clark's route and how the United States looked in 1860.
Prentice Hall
Also for history aficionados, The Online Map Bank offers many historic maps from the Early world to Kingdoms of the Middle Ages to maps from the different wars. Again, these maps are in PDF format.
General Maps
There are plenty of sites where you can type in an address or location and retrieve a map from the surrounding area. Most sites let you zoom in and out, add attractions, and see what is nearby. You can prints the maps directly from the site, or you can even send them to your phone. The following sites are some of the best around:
- Google Maps - Google maps can be customized to provide only maps, or maps overlaid with additional information such as photos, videos, webcams and even Wikipedia entries.
- Mapquest - One of the oldest direction and mapping sites on the Internet. Accuracy is Mapquest's forte, with a continuously updated database of roads and routes.
- Yahoo Maps - Even though Yahoo Maps is very similar to Google Maps, Yahoo offers a more visibly appealing interface.
- Bing Maps - Bing Maps is powered by Microsoft, so you'll find detailed maps from just about anywhere in the world.
Online Maps, Printable Cities
Printable online maps of cities are available at Maps of World. The high quality maps can be printed or purchased so you can have a larger copy in your home. All the countries are available as well as capital city maps and various other types of maps like:

Maps.com
Maps.com is the world's largest map store. Not only can you print digital maps, you can order atlases, road maps, and wall maps. Some of the different type of maps you can print are:
- Elevation map
- County (North America) or district (other countries) maps.
- Time zone
- Satellite map
Maps.com also offers a radius map, which isn't available for printing, but it is a neat feature. A radius map is where you specify a center point and distance from that point and Maps.com will send you a map based on that area. The smaller the radius the more detailed the map is.
National Atlas
Sponsored by the United States government, National Atlas provides some unique maps of the United States. For example, you can print up a map of Federal Lands and Indian Reservations or print up a mean temperature map. If the maps they provide aren't specific enough, start with their Map Maker. You can customize a map from all kinds of data like election results, geology, crime, and economy, to name a few. While you can get extremely detailed with options, there are a few basic settings you can select if you just want cities, counties, or roads. National Atlas is the perfect site for those wanting general maps of the United States to print that you can't find anywhere else.
