Online Dating Tips

From LoveToKnow Online

Playing the online dating service game can be tricky, but if you consider a few online dating tips, it can also be fun. It has a lot of the same principles as product advertising. This may sound strange, but if you apply some Madison Avenue tactics to writing an online dating profile you may find results that please you.

Online Dating Tips

Presentation Is Everything

Much like a car salesman trying to talk you into buying the latest sportscar, you are trying to entice someone into noticing your best features. Instead of bragging about how low-mileage the car is, you're showing off your fun side. A cynical online dating ad may be attractive to some, but to many others this screams "high maintenance!" Try to make yourself seem like a good person to get to know.

Be Honest..But Not TOO Honest

Maybe you aren't the life of the party. This is OK; you can talk this up as well--in the right way. When Brand X toothpaste--which is far from being number one at the sales counter--gets an advertisement, the commercials always highlight some other aspect of the product; the fact that four out of five dentists recommend it, or it tastes really, REALLY good. Brand X never mentions it came in sixth out of the top ten brands, because this makes it sound like a loser, quite frankly. Don't say you stay at home constantly and live a boring, uneventful life--even if you do. Instead, say you have a relaxing, carefree lifestyle. Talk about the things you enjoy in your online ad and play them up.

Pretty Packaging

You never see a soft drink can on television with a big dent in it, or one that looks dirty, or even one that doesn't look like it just came out of a cooler full of melting ice. That soda can ALWAYS has a nice coating of beaded water droplets and is shinier than a new car. This should also apply to your online ad photograph. Choose a picture that shows you in some good clothes, wearing a smile, and with a recent hairdo. If you have Bob Dylan hair, or a Sinead O'Connor bald 'do, don't put up last year's picture of your screaming orange dye job. Guys, get a freshly pressed shirt on for your photograph and a shave--unless you're the rugged model type who looks good with the stubble. Ladies, modest is good--one or two buttons undone on that shirt is alluring, but your bikini shot is probably going to make you look a bit wilder than you really are. Unless, of course, you really are that wild and want to attract dates who will expect that.

Answer A Question With A Question

Maybe you don't want to give too much about yourself away in the online ad--you'd rather save it for an actual conversation. It could be that your're cautious, or perhaps you've read too many horror stories about online dates gone wrong, and you want to screen your suitors carefully. If this is the case, try throwing one or two items about yourself into the mix and asking more questions. Some sample questions to ask include:

  • What are the last ten books you've read?
  • What is your favorite film and why?
  • Describe your ideal first date.

These questions will, believe it or not, often let you know what you're dealing with. Does your ad responder tell you "I hate books and never read three, let alone TEN!" Maybe knowing this detail is a plus, or maybe it sends you screaming into the night. Either way, you'll be glad you asked.

Get The Benefit Of Other People's Experience

Study some online ads and see what other people are doing. You'll also want to search for topics like online dating tips for men or online dating tips for women and get some experienced advice and common-sense tips.

Don't Give Up!

It takes a lot of trial and error to create an ad that works well. You may have to post it for a while and revamp it a few times before you find the responses you seek. Don't give up just because you don't get any initial responses. After a few weeks of fine tuning, you could be getting more replies than you know what to do with.
