Make Your Own Virtual Pet

From LoveToKnow Online

Taking care of a pet is hard work and we cannot choose what our furry little friend will be like - unless you make your own virtual pet.

A Favorite Pastime for Kids

As a parent you have probably heard your child ask with blind fervor for that kitten or puppy, and each time you have had to say no for a myriad of reasons like not being able to afford a pet or just not having the time to properly care for one. However, if you are looking for an activity that the kids can enjoy on those ho-hum rainy days, then make your own virtual pet. In most cases these faux pets are completely free and can entertain your kids (or yourself) for hours.

The Different Kinds of Virtual Pets

There are several kinds of virtual pets that are available on the Internet.

Downloadable Virtual Pet

You can visit one of many “adoption centers” and download a small software program that will be kept on your hard drive. You can access your pet any time you wish, though usually they remain “alive” as long as the computer is turned on. They will pop up from time to time to play with you, ask for food or some other activity like play a game. You do not have to be connected to the Internet to use it, but you also run a small risk of getting a virus or a spybot. Make sure you have your virus checker running and only download programs from sites you trust.

Online Virtual Pet

These types of virtual pets require you to have access to the Internet so you can visit the web site in order to interact with your pet. Most of the sites you encounter will make you sign up before being able to make your own virtual pet or download one that is already available. There are a two main styles of online virtual pet available:

  • You can download an animated graphic that you place on your website as its “home”.
  • You can sign up on a website to select a pet and must log in to the site to take care of its needs by playing with it, feeding it and buying it supplies.

Plush Virtual Pets

Plush virtual pets are a more recent fad taking over the world and include TY (the makers of Beanie Babies) and WebKinz. You have to buy a cute little plush animal and when you get it home you log on to the website, and enter in a code to register new animal. From here you can create an online version of your new animal as well as interact in chat rooms, compete in games and the like.
