How To Find An Apartment Online

From LoveToKnow Online

Finding an apartment online can be a challenge the first time, but the good news is that once you've made a few contacts online, you'll soon get the hang of the electronic search for a new home.

How To Find An Apartment Online

Where to Start?

One of the best resources people in major cities have is Craigslist. This resource is basically an electronic bulletin board for apartment seekers. There is no middleman, as with Apartment Finders, you simply respond to the ad and get the details on where and when to see the apartment. Another good major city apartment resource is Rentnet which also features a handy list of tips and other helpful articles on how to learn the ins and outs of apartment searching online.

Searching For An Apartment Online

When you do a search for apartments online, no matter if you are using Online Apartment Guide or some similar web site, you will be much better off deciding what you are willing to look at in advance; do you want a room mate? If you aren't willing to share a living space, you will probably wade through many ads seeking roommates on places like Craigslist unless you specify otherwise in your search. Use the advanced search engines to narrow down your quest to apartments with no roomies!

No Photos?

Hunting for an apartment online is just like online dating--there are many people out there who would like to hide flaws in their apartments until they can get you out to look at the space. Are you willing to put up with low water pressure or old flooring if the location is right? Or is appearance and the serviceability of the apartment more important to you? These are questions you'll need to ask yourself in advance. Beware of the apartment ads that offer no photos of the space. You shouldn't skip them entirely, but turn on your radar from that point forward and keep an eye open for anything that seems unusual. When in doubt, always ask! Your potential new landlord should answer all your questions directly and to your satisfaction. If they don't, keep looking. Don't be afraid to ask to have photographs emailed prior to your looking at the apartment either.

Safety

When you accept an offer to see an apartment that looks promising, you may wish to bring a friend along. This is a good, common-sense safety move that applies to any apartment search. After all, you are meeting these people for the first time, and only after a viewing a few emails and a web site. It never pays to be too trusting in situations like these. At the very least, call someone to let him know where you are going, and be sure the person giving you the guided tour of the apartment knows too! A cell phone is practically a necessity in situations like these--if you don't own one, borrow a friend's phone to bring with you, just in case.

Last, But Not Least

If you like something you see, keep looking at other apartments in your price range just in case. It's always a good idea to compare prices, amenities and proximity to conveniences such as public transportation and grocery stores. Some people are tempted to take the first decent looking place they see, but those who continue looking until they find something that feels right are happiest with their new homes. An informed rental choice is the best choice of all!
