Free Online Tetris Game
From LoveToKnow Online
When it comes to finding fun things to play for free online, Tetris games are an obvious choice. Tetris games won't tax your computer's processing power, and even those on dial-up can enjoy the game without any annoying lags. Even as online games become flashier, bloodier and more realistic, players turn to these classic falling blocks time and again.
What is Tetris?
Tetris is a classic Nintendo puzzle game. Combinations of four blocks drop from the top of the screen, and you must rotate and move them into position to create rows. If you make a full row, it disappears, but if you don't, the blocks continue to pile up until you reach the top of the screen, ending the game.
Free Online Tetris Games
Perhaps Tetris' popularity comes from its simplicity, because it has endured in various formats since its creation in 1985, and now it's widely available online. Here are just a few of the free online Tetris game options available to players.
- Online Tetris is a bare-bones version of Tetris that still maintains the classic play elements. It's not flashy, but it gets the job done.
- Free Games showcases another classic presentation, right down to the texture of the blocks. Oddly enough, this is one of the few sites that seem concerned with potential copyright issues, calling their free online Tetris game "tetrollapse."
- Miniclip.com gives players a more stylish version of the game, with music, sound effects and several block styles. It also adds to the basic game with special brick options, including a single cube which can be helpful in filling out your rows. This version appears on several free game sites, including Addicting Games and Funny Games.
- Mr. Free Free provides a list of several free online Tetris games, including updated 3D versions
- Alex-Soft.net offers several variations on the Tetris theme. Most games on this page seem to be trial versions hoping to convince you to buy the full version for $19.95, but a free trial still means free gameplay. One of the more interesting versions of Tetris on this site incorporates real-world physics, so those blocks don't behave nicely and fall into neat rows.
Online Game Security Concerns
Some sites share their version of Tetris out of sheer love of the game. Most others rely on ads to pay the bandwidth costs. A few, unfortunately, use their free games as a way to gain entry to your computer.
When playing games online, be cautious about downloading any files. Ideally, you will be able to play a free online Tetris game in your browser with no additional downloads required. If you do decide that you feel secure in downloading a file from a site, don't open it without first running a virus scan. Unfortunately, even if there isn't a damaging virus attached to the file, you still may unknowingly install spyware or adware on your computer alongside the game.
There is one exception. Depending on the programming behind a game, you may receive an error message from your browser saying that you need to upgrade to the latest version of Java or Flash. However, even with these necessary downloads, make sure that you are acquiring these updates directly from the company websites.
