In 1890, Elijah Bond and Charles Kennard applied to patent a planchette that used a board printed with the alphabet. Once patented, William Fuld, an employee of Charles Kennard, took over production of the board. He began marketing his own board under the name Ouija. Upon Fuld’s death in 1926, Parker Brothers purchased the Ouija’s patent and trademark. While Parker Brothers still manufactures the Ouija brand, there are many other companies that sell similar boards.

Using a Ouija Board

Those who believe in the power of the Ouija board will use it only in a neutral place, one free from negative energy. It should be night time. Ideally there will be at least one man and one woman in the room, but some use the Ouija by themselves. The board should be free of dust or moisture as this interferes with the pointer movement. Some recommend adding a vase of flowers to the table.

The users sit with the Ouija between them, each placing both hands on the pointer. They are careful to avoid exacting any pressure on its movement. Users take turns asking questions. The pointer moves across the board spelling out answers to the question. A tape recorder or third person records the session.

Skeptics

Just as with any other paranormal activity, many do not believe that the Ouija facilitates contact with the spirit world. The scientific explanation of the Ouija pointer movement is an involuntary, subconscious reflex by the participants. The pointer can also be manipulated by one user.
