Barclays Online Banking
From LoveToKnow Online
Barclays online banking lets you bank online any time of the day or night.
Why Use Barclays Online Banking?
For those who work fulltime, getting to the bank before it closes can be difficult. Many banks aren't open on Saturday. While some banks offer extended hours, others keep only business hours, which are typically nine to five. Running through the drive-through during your lunch hour can be impractical and sometimes impossible. Barclays online banking offers you convenient and secure banking from the comfort of your home any time of the day or night. You don't pay for the banking service; you only pay for the cost of any calls while online and your normal ISP charges.
Options
What options are available through Barclays online banking? You have a variety of choices, including the following:
- Once you register, you have access to all of the online services.
- You can check your balances for all of the accounts you have registered.
- You can view statements for each account.
- You can transfer money from one account to another.
- You can pay bills online and send money to others.
- You can also apply for personal loans.
All of these options are available online, but you can still visit a regular branch and access ATMs as well.
Getting Started
In order to set up a Barclays account, you'll need to do the following:
- You need a current account before you can begin.
- Access the Barclays website to register online.
- You'll need an email address and your debit card.
- If you want to pay bills online, you'll need a PINsentry reader card, which is a small hand-held device that will generate new eight-digit codes every time you log on to the online banking program. You use the PINsentry reader card by inserting your debit or authentication card into the device before beginning a transaction. This gives you added security while you bank online.
- You will be able to save your name and membership number on your computer to save time when you log-in using a five-digit pass code and two random letters.
Security
Many people worry about keeping their accounts secure when banking online. Barclays continuously updates its site to make it as secure as possible. Keep these points in mind:
- Barclays offers free anti-virus software and text message updates.
- They offer a free SMS service for customers who regularly make payments online to others. A text message is sent to customers when new online third-party payments are set up on their account. If any activity looks suspicious, you can contact a customer service representative.
- The online banking service will never ask you for your personal online banking info by email. Scammers often set up sites that are copycats of the original, asking for personal info. You can report any suspicious emails to customer service as well.
- Be vigilant in regards to your account. Check your account regularly for any unfamiliar transactions. If you think someone might have accessed your account, contact customer service.
- Be sure your anti-virus software is up-to-date.
Making the Switch to Online Banking
If you haven't tried online banking before, you are in for a pleasant surprise. No longer do you have rush to the bank to make transactions. You also can forget about being put on hold as you await your bank balance. Bill paying is so much easier and quicker as well. You can pay your bills with a click of the mouse, so no more writing checks, stuffing and licking envelopes. For more information, you can contact the bank directly by calling 0845 600 2323 or outside the UK at +44 2476 842063.
